What we currently do:

 

Collective Care

Peer support groups: Led by people with shared personal experiences, supporting each other to run their activities and groups, e.g. recovery groups Training available for anyone interested. Also working with Thistle Peer volunteers

“Community Connectors”: Providing support and connection with others in the community, e.g. an oral history project in collaboration with Craigmillar Now where older people share memories of the area with younger people

Covid-19 response work: Working with local community partners to provide volunteers to help deliver community food hampers, or helping people apply for computers and digital support

 

Creative and cultural activities:

  • Craigmillar Tapestry & Stitching project
  • Storytelling family events
  • Skill-Sharing sessions
  • Art & Sketching groups
  • Open mic nights
  • Walking groups & Bike rides

 

Community-led projects

Craigmillar Gala Day: Gala weekend celebration on August 14th and 15th across Craigmillar and Niddrie . Open to all to get involved in planning and in running activities during the weekend

‘The Hub’ community workshop DIY space: New workshop space near The Thistle Foundation to be developed by local people into a makers space. All help is welcome.

Local community mural: For the hoardings around the new Castlebrae High and for an exhibition. Still in development

 

Some things coming up open for new people are;

  • Family Support Group (for people with family members experiencing addiction) – date TBC, from late August.
  • Men’s Recovery Group Wednesdays 4.30 – 6pm at the Thistle from mid August
  • Craigmillar Festival – August 14th. Planning in motion, open to all.

 

Further into the future

  • Craigmillar Poverty Commission group possibility
  • Community Table Tennis Club at the Jack Kane – evening
  • Collaboration with Edinburgh Yoga
  • Locally led walks on the Helen Crummy Memorial Trail
  • Family support group (for family members of people with an addiction)
  • Jewellery-making classes
  • ‘Power in Perspective’ Photography course
  • ‘Breath of fresh air’ painting and creative writing workshops
  • Connecting Craigmillar Advisory Forum
